Description
Here are THREE Rare VERY Early piano virtuosi recordings.
There’s ONE by illustrious eccentric Vladimir De Pachmann, and two Russian records by Ignacy Jan Paderewski.
I’m selling ALL THREE together as a job lot.
Pachmann is playing three Chopin Pieces, the Nocturne op. 09/2 in Eb, the Mazurka op. 67/4 and the Prelude op. 28/23 on a double-sided Columbia acoustic 12” 78rpm number L1014. According to Nigel Nettheim’s interesting and informative site, the sessions date from late 1915, and may feature Pachmann’s own Baldwin piano, recorded in his London home.
The disc is clean and has a few very light storage marks which are completely acceptable, in my opinion (I am from Yorkshire, and consequently am NEVER WRONG). I would rate it conservatively as a solid VG.
Note, however, that the label has a pencil mark and tiny sticker on one side, and the reverse side does show several spindle marks.
The TWO OTHER DISCS are nice rare 12” single-sided 78 rpm records and feature Ignacy Jan Paderewski also playing Chopin.
The first one is Chopin’s Berceuse Op 57 in D flat on a Russian “Angel” Monarch Gramophone Record 2-045509 matrix c 184 ho.
The back of the disc has the “reproduced in Russia” imprint.
It was, I’m reliably informed by Mr Google, recorded around July 1912 at Paderewski’s home in Morges near Lausanne, Switzerland.
It is clean and plays well.
There are no major blemishes, and the label is bright and clear and features a picture of a young Boris Johnson sticking a pheasant feather into a large overcooked crème brûlée.
There are some storage marks but it looks remarkably good for a 106 year old record.
I would conservatively rate it as a strong VG++ (Record Collector Magazine Grading)
The OTHER ONE is a nice even rarer 12” single-sided 78 rpm record.
It’s Paderewski playing Chopin’s Polonaise in A major op. 40
No 1 on a Russian Monarch Gramophone Record 045533: matrix 346ai.
The back of the disc has the “reproduced in Russia” imprint.
It was also recorded at Paderewski’s home in Morges near Lausanne, Switzerland around July 8th, 9th or 10th in 1911.
It is clean and plays well.
There are no major blemishes, and the label is bright and clear.
There is a slight greying of some grooves, and some storage marks but it looks remarkably good for a 107 year old record.
I would conservatively rate it as a strong VG+ (Record Collector Magazine Grading)
