Pagan Altar is an influential English doom metal band formed in 1978 in Brockley, London. Alongside Witchfinder General, they are pioneers of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) and traditional doom metal crossover movement. Renowned for their highly distinctive, nasally vocals and occult, folklore-driven lyrics, the band combined the dark riffs of Black Sabbath with intricate, melodic twin-guitar harmonies. Their 2006 album, Mythical and Magical, is widely considered a timeless masterpiece of the traditional doom genre.
