This beautiful and rare gatefold LP from Vega (C 30 A 29, French pressing, white label, heavy canvas jacket, mono – no stereo edition exists) features the legendary Parrenin Quartet in probing accounts of Bartok’s String Quartets No. 1 in A minor Sz 40 Op. 7 and No. 4 Sz 91. Both works were warmly recorded in Paris in October 1956.
At this time the Parrenin Quartet was comprised of Jacques Parrenin (1st violin), Marcel Charpentier (2nd violin), Serge Collot (viola), and Pierre Penassou (cello).
The Quatuor Parrenin were among the finest exponents of 20th Century music during the post-war era, and their discography is among the most varied, and impressive, of any string quartet. In fact, their artistry is richly deserving of systematic re-issue and reappraisal on CD.
Incidentally, the left interior panel of the gatefold apprecation of Bartok’s Six String Quartets written by composer Francis Poulenc, no less. There are additional notes by John Downey – all texts provided in French only. Bound in a heavy gatefold jacket, this is arguably the finest possible pressing of these legendary recordings.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the heavy canvas gatefold jacket is VERY GOOD. There is minor bumping at corners, as well as discoloration, more so along the spine. However, there are no bends, seamsplits, owners' markings, or other defects and the album remains solid, bright, and attractive in appearance – overall, a very good collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Though there is occasional light surface noise, in general the playback remains quite fine. However, those wanting a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
