Description
This unique musical cylinder was made in France by the company Pathe'. It was founded by two brothers Charles & Emile Pathe, who owned a successful bistro in Paris. About 1890 they saw the Edison phonograph demonstrated at a fair and were captivated by the device and decided to make their own phonographs. In 1894 they started selling their own phonographs together with blank phonograph cylinders for people to record their own voices. Some time later they started marketing pre-recorded cylinder records, and by 1896 had offices and recording studios in Paris, London, Milan and Moscow. In 1905 they entered the growing field of disc records.This company later became Columbia records in 1928. More detailed information is available on Wikipedia.
The artist of this particular cylinder is named Sir Harry Lauder - (1870-1950). Sir Harry Lauder was a well known Irish comedian and singer. He made a name for himself with his first hit song "Calligan-Call again" while performing at the Argyle Theatre Birkenhead in 1898! This is the name on this cylinder!.

Description of the Cylinder # 60454: This 2 1/2' wide by 4 1/2' tall cylinder is in fairly good shape for its age. It does have some aging and some stains on the outside case. The leather is still in good shape and the label is still attached. The top of the cylinder case has aged and is a bit dark, but you can still make out many of the words and numbers on the top of the cylinder. The wax cylinder inside is in good shape. The title of the song is also engraved on the edge of the cylinder. I have looked for a cylinder like this for years to determine it's value and have not found any, so... I feel that this is a very rare and unique item. In addition, I think the fact that I have the title of the song, the information about Sir Harry Lauder, the lyrics to the song and the company information makes this even more special for someone that collects this type of item.
