-Mini bio: Vancouver female rocker Patty Surbey was born in Burnaby, B.C., Canada and was an important part of the fledgling Vancouver rock scene of the early 1960's. She released just two singles, both with backing from The Canadian V.I.P.'s.The first was (I Want) A Beatle For Christmas b/w Christmas All Year 'Round (Aragon 402) and then she released Hey Boy! b/w Everyone I Know (With the Canadian V.I.P's on their own, on Sparton 4-1341).

-(I Want) A Beatle For Christmas was released three months after the Beatles performed in Vancouver at Empire Stadium on Aug. 22, 1964. Although the lyrics were quite geared to the younger teenage female record buyer of the time, like "Remember last Christmas when I asked for Ringo?...All you gave me was a game of Bingo!". In spite of the light weight lyrics, and that it was sung rather in the style of Annette Funicello, it still resonates with quite a bit of pent up power due in large part to the The Canadian V.I.P.'s musicianship including driving bass, drums, keyboards, strummed guitar and also due to Patty Surbey who delivers all manner of female sqeaks and screams and is delivered with just the the right amount of adoration for the Beatles.

-This song was featured in a Bear Family Rare Vancouver Rockabilly and Rock & Roll CD compilation in 2003 titled Real Gone Aragon ( a 28-song CD featuring tracks recorded for Vancouver's first record label, Aragon, by long-forgotten artists like Les Vogt and the Prowlers, Rudy Hayden and the Country Boys and Patty Surbey and the Canadian V.I.P.'s.) and was reviewed by John Mackie of The Vancouver Sun on January 31, 2004 who ends up his review by stating "The real dazzler is (I Want) A Beatle For Christmas, a Brenda Lee-style rocker by Patty Surbey and the Canadian V.I.P.'s that features one of the greatest female yelps ever committed to vinyl. Surbey is surely one of the great lost singers in Canadian Rock--no one seems to know whatever happened to her. But on Real Gone Aragon, her name burns again".

-The flip side, Christmas All Year 'Round has never been compiled anywhere, and the only way to have it in your collection is to own the original 45. The song is a mid-tempo garage rocker with driving bass, keyboards, drums, strummed guitar and amazing vocals from Patty Surbey with a fantastic guitar solo from Dave Trainor.

-Patty Surbey, now a born-again Christian, is living in Ontario and is no longer in the music business.

-An extremely rare 45 which was pressed in very small numbers. Al Reusch was the owner of Aragon Records and he blames the records lack of international success on the post office: "We made a deal to lease the master to the World Pacific label in the States. We mailed it down in time but it arrived too late. It was too close to Christmas for them to put it out. It was a big record locally though, as it was played a lot on the radio."

-The Vancouver V.I.P.'s comprised of Jim Bach (bass), Wayne Dahl (vocals), Louis Petrie (keyboards), Patty Surbey (vocals), Dave Trainor (guitar) and Pat Trainor (drums). Norm Hanson sometimes sat in on bass.

-Visual grade: Very good with many surface scratches, but in spite of this, because it is pressed on pure vinyl, plays quietly with full fidelity, no distortion and sounds as one might expect from a much higher grade record.

Record grading:

(M) Mint: We don't use this grade as no record is perfect, even SS records can have tiny flaws.

(SS) Still sealed: Still sealed in the factory shrink wrap.

(M-) Mint minus: A nearly perfect record. The record will show no obvious signs of wear. Original finish intact. Picture sleeves should have no more than the most minor defects, such as almost invisible ring wear or other signs of slight handling.

(VG+) Very good plus: The record will show some signs that it was played or otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. Record surfaces may show some slight signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or light scratches. Picture sleeves may have some slight ring wear, lightly turned up corners, or a small seam split.

(VG) Very good: Many of the defects found in a VG+ record or sleeve will be more pronounced in a VG record or picture sleeve. Groove wear may be noticeable, the record may have light scratches (deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that will affect the sound, but the foreign noises will be less prominent than the music. Picture sleeves may have quite prominent ring wear. Creases, folds, seam splits and tears will be more obvious and may appear on all three sides, and there may be writing as well.

(VG-) Very good minus: Foreign noises may be about as prominent as the music. The record still plays through without skipping. The picture sleeve will have more significant seam splits, perhaps to the point where they were taped closed, and highly obvious ring wear and heavier writing. Can serve as a filler until a better one comes along.

(G) Good: We seldom offer a good record for sale unless it is particularily rare for the following reasons: Foreign noises are louder than the recorded music and listening can be distracted by the noise. May or may not play through without skipping, but should be so noted. Picture sleeves are so badly seam split that they may not be able to contain the record within.Tears, folds, writing and ring wear may be overwheming.
