I am currently in the process of shifting a large collection of stock which comes from a Record Shop which closed its doors in the early 1980s.  The stock spans a period from the early 1960s through to the early 80s with the bulk dating from the 1970s.  There are large quantities of Folk, Pop, Progressive Rock, R & B and Soul.  Most of the items have sustained a single play (clearly standard practice to check for flaws upon receipt of new records back-in-the-day) however, some are obviously unplayed.  Material sourced from this collection will be introduced by this paragraph.

ITEM

Hard-to-find Original U.K. 1969 ELEKTRA Red Label STEREO pressing of The Butterfield Blues Band’s ‘Keep On Moving’ L.P. (Catalogue Reference: Elektra EKS 74053).  I believe this to be the first pressing as the matrixes read ‘EKS 74053 A//1’ and ‘EKS 74053 B//1’.  During this period Elektra records were pressed by Polydor and accordingly, this is a flat-labelled Polydor pressing.  The sleeve is a just as typically useless period Polydor job with a ‘pinched’ spine (I say useless because this kind of sleeve construction was cheap and flimsy and particularly prone to damage).

CONDITION: EXCELLENT+ (VINYL) / EXCELLENT- (SLEEVE)

The vinyl is still stored in the original poly-lined inner which has afforded really superior protection.  This is a copy which I would guess has sustained a couple of plays at most.  There are no marks of substance (i.e. which can be felt).  There is a section of the playing surface on Side One with a couple of superficial surface scuffs but otherwise the only marks present are of the lightest kind (we’re talking the lightest, wispiest hairline marks which are only minimally present and which can only be seen under an intense light).  Aside from a very light spindle ‘drag’ on the Side Two label the labels are otherwise immaculate which is saying something because these red Elektra labels are prone to showing up all greasy fingerprints.  Basically, you’ll really struggle to find a better copy.  The sleeve isn’t quite as immaculate as the vinyl however, this isn’t exactly surprising when you consider how prone this type of sleeve construction is to being damaged.  These Polydor sleeves really weren’t very durable.  Despite these comments I believe this to still be a very solid copy.  For starters these sleeves weren’t laminated and therefore it is surprising that this shows no evidence of ‘rubbing’ (i.e. the print being lost to handling).  A major plus to this copy is how vivid the colouring of the sleeve remains.  The rear is also still pretty white (aside from some yellowing along the exposed opening edge).  The spine information is still clearly visible.  There are a couple of obvious flaws.  A sticker has been removed from the top right-hand corner on the front of the sleeve and this torn the sleeve a little (this should be visible in the attached images).  On the point of stickers I can just discern some sticker residue in the top left-hand corner (this isn’t very obvious but I’ve seen it under an intense light).  The bottom right-hand corner has received a substantial enough knock to have bent the sleeve and being so flimsy the damage can be seen on both sides of the sleeves.  There is creasing visible to the top left-hand corner of the sleeve which doesn’t appear to have resulted from a knock to the sleeve.  Lastly, there is evidence of handling to the opening edge of the sleeve which has resulted in a couple of creases from the sleeve being gripped between the fingertips whilst the vinyl is removed.  I still believe the condition of the sleeve is too good for a VG grading to a certain extent you could say I’m taking into consideration the poor survival of this type of Polydor construction and how hard it would be to find superior copies.

FINAL COMMENT

Overall this is a very nice copy indeed!  There were two copies from this unsold stock (many items came in duplicate) and this is my last copy.  Please check my other auctions for a large selection of Folk, Pop, R n B, Rock and Soul collectables from the same source in similarly immaculate condition!  Save me as a favourite seller as there is plenty more where this came from!  Overseas buyers welcome!
