From Vee-Jay Records (LP 1014), this is GO by PAUL CHAMBERS,
a beautiful original pressing from 1959. The jacket rates VG+ or better
showing a radio station timing strip on front surface; the LP is EX+ and
better, playing mostly in the NEAR MINT MINUS range. A whisper of
extraneous noise is heard between cuts but nothing intrudes into the music.
SIDE ONE
Cut One: A few soft pops, as the tonearm lowers, settle down nicely showing
a bright sax and clear keyboard. There is minor intermittent extraneous noise
throughout but nothing ever intrudes into the music, in fact, there are long
passages with no noise whatsoever, rating at least EX+ to NEAR MINT with
the aforementioned minor flaws noted. When the bass (bowed?) steps in,
no noise joins. Extraneous sounds are intermittent -- one has to concentrate
to notice them.
Cut Two plays with less noise, the trumpet being brassy without being in your
face. The piano is clean bringing nothing to the overall sound but gentle runs
and bop chords. After each solo flourish one hears applause suggesting a small
club or studio. Again, the bass seems to be bowed. [no noise whatsoever
between cuts two and three]
Cut Three: No noise, just music -- a quiet piece with trumpet struttin' its stuff
and piano laid back. Still no noise. Nice harmonies between trumpet & sax as
they fade.
SIDE TWO
Cut One starts with a whisper of noise and immediately settles down. The sax
then does some runs that are crystal clear, free from distortion & any
extraneous noise. A couple of very soft clicks about mid-way through don't
distract, and settle down almost immediately. The drums are astounding &
bring needed air to the proceedings; then the base solo (plucked this time)
joins the piano in a nice hard bop dance.
Cut Two: A quiet passage shows minimal clicks (more applause) as the group
kicks it up a notch to more clapping. The trumpet hits some high notes with
no extraneous noise whatsoever. More applause. Next, the piano plays fast
& softly with, again, no extraneous noise. Applause.
Cut Three: No noise as the band launches into Got Rhythm at a fast pace.
The sax riffs beautifully & gets appreciation from the crowd; the trumpet
blazes through riffs to claps & Paul bows again with soft piano in support
as clapping intensifies. Then drums tear it up and throughout all this, no
extraneous noise. It's now time for the whole band to join in for the big
finish followed by loud appreciation. No noise is present as the wax comes
to an end.
This is NOT a perfect piece of vinyl; it is NOT for everyone. The snooty
jazz aficionado with the million-dollar system won't like it. But those of
us in the real world do for there is not even a hint of distortion and none
of that pfft sound around the bass instrument associated with older LPs
that have been enjoyed multiple times. This album is a joy to hear and
will provide many hours of pleasurable listening. The original inner sleeve
is present and in great shape (see photos).
Overall, the finest example of this hard bop classic we've ever seen.
