Paul Pena was one of the most incredible musicians and songwriters on the planet. He was plagued by lifelong illness, he was blind from congenital glaucoma, he was a diabetic, he was absolutely brilliant. He wrote Jet Airliner which became a big hit for Steve Miller! Pena's first album was released on Capitol Records in 1972. New Train was recorded in 1973 for Bearsville but was prevented from being released via a court injunction over contract disputes filed by Albert Grossman, Dylan's manager and Bearsville owner. The court case dragged on forever and prevented Pena from making further recordings for anyone else. Ben Sidran, originally the keyboardist with Steve Miller, produced New Train, and got a tape to Steve Miller. Steve Miller covered Jet Airliner in 1977 and it became a staple of classic rock radio. Had it not been for the royalties from Jet Airliner, Paul Pena would have been destitute. 
Hybrid finally released New Train in 2000, 27 years after it was recorded! Over the years, Paul Pena has worked with Bonnie Raitt on her first album, and became friends with the Grateful Dead upon moving to San Francisco from Boston in 1971. Jerry Garcia, Merle Saunders and The Persuasions appear on New Train. This album was lost and unreleased for years until Hybrid put out a limited edition in 2000.  Paul Pena died of complications from diabetes and pancreatitis in 2005. His talent is huge!
