Excellent album with performances by Bertram Turetzky of 3 experimental compositions for bass using extended playing techniques and magnetic tape. The Cage piece incorporates indeterminacy and graphic notation influenced by renaissance tablature; this version is presented as a multitracked tape collage realized by Harold Budd by superimposing Turetzky's playing of different parts of the score following Cage's suggestion. Oliveros' work provides parameters for improvisation for the performers, and was written specifically for Turetzky who performs with Nancy Turetzky, flutes, and Ronald George, percussion. The Johnston piece is a tape collage work made by Johnston and engineer Jaap Spek combining multiple tracks and tape loops of Turetzky's bass-playing, typewriter sounds, and scatological vocals.

Bertram Turetzky brought about the emergence of the contrabass as a solo instrument (along with Fernando Grillo), and has worked with Barre Phillips, George Lewis, Ilhan Mimaroglu, and Vinny Golia; he has recorded on Derek Bailey's Incus label. • Oliveros studied under Hugh Le Caine, Robert Erickson, and Thomas Nee, has worked with Terry Riley, Morton Subotnick, Luciano Berio, and Stuart Dempster, and is an experimental pioneer who combined electronics, minimalism, meditation, droning, just intonation tuning, and improvisation. • Cage, arguably the most influential American composer of the 20th century, was known for his innovative use of chance methods, silence, found sounds, and extended playing and electroacoustic treatment techniques on traditional instruments; he studied under Henry Cowell and Arnold Schoenberg, led the New York School of early postwar experimental composers (Earle Brown, Christian Wolff, Morton Feldman), was a contemporary of Karlheinz Stockhausen and Iannis Xenakis, colaborated with Conlon Nancarrow, David Tudor, and Merce Cunnigham, and was associated with the Fluxus 'post-dada' art movement (Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, George Maciunas, Joseph Beuys, La Monte Young, Milan Knizak, etc.). • Johnston, a University of Illinois colleague of Herbert Brun, Lejaren Hiller, Kenneth Gaburo, and Salvatore Martirano, was a pupil of Harry Partch, John Cage, and Darius Milhaud. • Budd is a composer known for his work with experimental rock musicians like the Cocteau Twins' Robin Guthrie and Andy Partridge of XTC, and his collaborations on ambient music with Brian Eno.
