ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This outstanding LP from Hungaroton (SLDP 31026, Hungarian pressing, yellow/black label, DDD stereo) entitled “Music for Cello and Piano” features the great Miklos Perenyi in a fascinating program of cello rarities, in which he is accompanied by the outstanding pianist Zoltan Kocsis. This is exalted music-making by any measure, magical from first bar to last.
The exact discographic contents are as follows:
Johann Sebastian Bach (arr. Kodaly): Three Chorale Preludes
Ach, was ist doch unser Legen (BWV 743)
Vater unser im Himmelreich (BWV 762)
Christus, der uns selig macht (BWV 747)
> rec. on 12 May 1988
Claude Debussy: Sonata for Cello and Piano
> rec. on 15 November 1987
Claude Debussy (arr. Zoltan Kocsis; fingering and bowing by Miklos Perenyi): Petite Suite
> rec. on 15 November 1987
Bela Bartok (arr. for cello and piano by the composer): Rhapsody No. 1
> rec. on 15 November 1987
Wrote the critic C.H. in his review for the November 1990 issue of The Gramophone: “The Debussy Petite Suite is a different matter. Kocsis is exceptionally good in this composer's music for piano solo and has here made sensitive arrangements in which both instruments share the melodic interest; the performance has the right rhythmic and tonal flexibility too. But the balance is not quite right, for the cello has been placed too close to a microphone (and the piano too far away) as if the engineers feared it would be swamped: some of its accompanimental figuration in "Cortege" and "Menuet" is too loud and one notices the same imbalance in the exchanges at the start of the latter. The Sonata seems to have a better positioning, but there is still something oddly covered about the piano sound while the cello lacks a true hushed pianissimo. Otherwise, strongly expressive playing from both artists makes this a satisfying performance, and predictably the central "Serenade" has both fantasy and tension.”
Incidentally, the striking cover art reprints a canvas by the painter Jozsef Rippl-Ronai. The liner notes on the reverse side (in Hungarian only) are by Zoltan Kocsis himself.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD++. There is a small bump/crush to the lower-left corner, slight bumping/wear at the other corners, and mild discoloration to the rear panel. However, there are no seamsplits, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, and glossy – overall, a very good collector’s copy.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT – overall, a superb collector's copy.
