This beautiful 5-LP box set – a superb collector’s copy – from Decca (6.35354 FX, German pressing, blue labels, stereo, boooklet included) features Itzhak Perlman and Vladimir Ashkenazy's brilliant traversal of Beethoven's 10 Violin Sonatas.
This cycle was recorded over sessions held between October 1973 and September 1976 (producers: Christopher Raeburn, Michael Woolcock, Richard Beswick / engineers: Kenneth Wilkinson, Colin Moorfoot, John Dunkerley).
Although recorded – hard to believe – over 40 years ago(!), these performances arguably still reign supreme among stereo cycles of the Beethoven Violin Sonatas. Perlman and Ashkenazy were at the height of their considerable powers and were in perfect accord, each matching the other bar for bar in inspiration, poetry, and virtuosity – stunning!

Wrote composer and critic Christopher Headington in the January 1989 issue of The Gramophone:
"Here, as has already been said by a colleague ''discernment is matched by spontaneity'' and the whole series is remarkably fine, while their celebrated performance of the Kreutzer Sonata has a quite superb eloquence and verve."

In the October 1984 issue of The Gramophone, Headington's colleague, the critic Lionel Salter, added:
"Their virtues of vitality, sense of rapport and deeply ingrained musicality have already, rightly, been much praised."

Also included is the full-size, 4-page booklet with extensive notes on the music by Gerhard Wienke, provided in German only.
PLEASE NOTE:
Even with minimal packaging this set will weigh over 1 kg. This means that outside of Europe the cost for shipping is about $40 USD, and that is just for standard airmail. Certified airmail (with a tracking number) costs $43 USD.
Those in doubt can visit the Spanish postal website (Correos.com), which is available in English. Although this listing states “free” shipping, it is not really free, of course. I have to pay for shipping like everyone else.

CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the box is near-MINT. Really, there are no flaws to speak of and the box appears almost as new – an outstanding collector’s copy.
The condition of the 4-page, full-size booklet is NM – no flaws to speak of.
The condition of the 5 LPs is near-MINT throughout and playback is superb in all 5 – overall, these rate as truly fine collector's copies.
PLEASE NOTE:
This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
