1st pressing/WLP/A&M records/Rare
Been sampled by hip hop artists Vast Aire, Muro, Freddie Joachim, Cypress Hill, Erick Sermon, MC Eiht, Redman, and the Ugly Ducklings.
Vinyl: VG+ condition, just shy of EX, small wispy hairlines, side 1 track 1 has a minor scuff, none of which effect playback. Nice and glossy. Slight storage warp that did not effect play on my personal TT. Best representation I have ever seen for an LP so ahead of it's time.
Cover: Solid EX to NM, promo punch top right corner, just the most average of wear, small sticker residue on front cover, barely noticeable. A few small bumped corners, nothing of an eyesore. Spine is perfect and completely legible. Just 2 cracks at the opening where the previous owner slid the LP in and out, but not at all eye catching.
Inner Sleeve: A little wrinkled up, but still in nice condition. I have included the original and placed the LP in a brand new anti static sleeve.
A forewarning, this LP was returned, because the previous buyer said it skipped all over side one. The previous buyer also said it contained a dimple error in the pressing that caused static throughout side one. I accepted the return, and upon return, listened to the LP in its entirety. I played it on my Marantz TT with a Shure stylus, and experienced nothing of the sort. It played perfectly on both sides, without a single skip, jump, or pop. It did contain the lightest of crackle between quiet spots going from track to new track. I used my record weight and it nearly cut the crackle out completely.
Pete Jolly's third album for A&M Records offers the closest recorded approximation of this musician’s talent yet offered the listener. Because in these grooves, produced by Herb Alpert, Jolly is heard not only on standard piano, but also on the Wurlitzer Electronic Piano, accordion, musette, Sano Vox, and Hammond Organ. The effect is startling to say the least, and at times a little unsettling as you wonder where the musician leaves off, and the engineer and technical studio wizards take over.
However, this album is no studio tour de force, but a "Live" recording in the sense that Jolly and fellow musicians Chuck Berhofer, Paul Humphrey, John Pisano, Milt Holland, and Emil Richards got together and improvised their way through 12 tunes in the space of four hours. The session was basically improvisational, and was completely open end, says Jolly. “We literally improvised as we went along – using visual and musical communications between ourselves to let the tunes happen, breathe and expand. It’s as simple as that. Then we edited down the four hours of tape, did a little overdubbing, and this album is the result”.
The result is a radical departure for Jolly, and a quite successful one. There are no familiar tunes here (with the exception of “Younger Than Springtime”) – no lush arrangements, or studio gimmickry. Just Pete and his friends playing for their own enjoyment, and we hope yours.
Mad keyboards galore -- electric piano, Hammond, and more -- all played in a unique all-improvised session from the legendary Pete Jolly. The set's unlike anything else that Pete ever recorded -- and is in a space somewhere between CTI funk of the early 70s and some of Herbie Hancock's more experimental electric jams. Paul Humphrey handles the drums, alongside percussion from Milt Holland and Emil Richards -- and the album's filled with incredible mellow funk tracks that have a completely original flavor. Very much in tune with the current Fender Rhodes revival -- and a record that was decades ahead of its time!
As always, I professionally clean the LP before departure, and include new inner and outer sleeves.
