Pete La Roca's Turkish Women At The Bath
Pete La Roca started his career playing timbales in Latin bands. He played drums with Sonny Rollins and had associations with Jackie McLean, Slide Hampton, the John Coltrane Quartet where he was the original drummer in 1960, and Marian McPartland. La Roca led his own group, was the house drummer at the Jazz Workshop in Boston and worked with Art Farmer, Freddie Hubbard, Mose Allison, Charles Lloyd, Paul Bley, and Steve Kuhn, among others. He led two impressive albums; the classic Blue Note record Basra with Joe Henderson and Turkish Women At The Bath (aka Bliss) a Douglas session featuring Chick Corea and John Gilmore. Pete La Roca's Turkish Women At The Bath was produced by Alan Douglas in 1967. The quartet is led by drummer Pete LaRoca, and features the talents of pianist Chick Corea, bassist Walter Booker, and tenor saxophonist John Gilmore. The album was later sold to Muse Records, who subsequently released it with a different title, Bliss!, listing Chick Corea as the leader. This is the original Douglas Records release. The Turkish Bath (Le Bain Turc) is an 1862 painting by the 82-year-old Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, showing nude women in a harem. Originally rectangular, it was altered to its present tondo form by the artist in 1863. Its erotic content did not provoke a scandal since for much its life it has remained in private collections. It is now in the Louvre in Paris, France.
