Artist: Pete Townshend / the Who / ‘Tommy’ Queens Theatre production
Format: Superb ephemera relating to the ‘Tommy’ show performed at the Queens Theatre, Shaftesbury Ave, London, which opened on February 6th, 1979, and closed later that year after no less than 118 performances and was the first fully staged production of the rock opera.
Production year: 1979
Rarity: super rarity, and the ephemera was the property of Stanley Osbourne White, who was the lighting designer at the Queens Theatre and heavily involved in the shows production.
The collection includes the following:
· Pete Townshend signed letter to Stanley dated May 23rd, 1979, commenting on the decision to close the show, which Pete has simply signed ‘Pete’. Two neat folds in this A4 letter on Pete Townshend headed paper and in superb excellent plus condition!
· Queens Theatre ‘Tommy’ flyer (13.5cm x 21.5cm est.) in very good condition with minor wear and creasing
· Queens Theatre ‘Tommy’ programme (13.5cm x 21.5cm est.) in excellent minus (-) condition with minimal wear and creasing
· Bill Graham signed letter dated January 6th, 1979, relating to the fee paid to Stanley for his services as Lighting Designer and Production Electrician. Bill was the ‘Production Manager’ for the show. Two neat folds in this A4 letter on Bill Graham ‘Backstage Productions’ headed paper and in superb excellent condition!
· ‘The Story of Tommy’ book: this is a super rare book and published by Pete Townshend own company ‘Eel Pie Publishing’, quoting Pete’s home address! This book has a beautiful dedication by Pete Townshend to Stanley in which he writes ‘To Stanley, thanks for some lovely rays!’, followed by a stunning and large Pete Townshend signature! I have collected a significant amount of ‘the Who’ memorabilia over the last forty-five years, and this is one of the very best signatures I have seen! This rare book overall is in excellent condition (23cm x 31cm est.) with only minor wear and creasing to the outer and lose dust sheet covering. Overall book is a strong excellent minus (-) condition and only marked down due to the wear on the delicate dust cover.
Provenance: purchased as lot 145 via auctioneers’ ‘Harper Field’ in October 2023. Redacted COA will be provided to buyer as proof of authenticity.
