Licensed for Manzanera's own Expression Records this 2LP set is one of the highlights of Phil Manzanera's recording career and one of the best live rock albums ever. Now re-mastered and re-packaged in deluxe 2LP format with bonus rehearsal sessions LP. Sides One & Two Recorded at The Queen Elizabeth Hall on the Island Mobile, Sept 3rd 1976. Sides Three & Four Recorded at Shepperton Studios at rehearsals, Aug 23rd 1976. In 1976, while Roxy Music had temporarily disbanded, 801 (the name of the band was taken from the Eno song "The True Wheel", which appears on his 1974 solo album Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy)) got together as a temporary project.. The original sextet included Phil Manzanera, Brian Eno, Bill MacCor- mick, Francis Monkman, Simon Phillips and Lloyd Watson, and after a warm up show in Cromer in Norfolk, that line-up played just two gigs - at the Reading Festival (with John Peel acclaiming them 'the musical high point of the weekend') and at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall. This memorable concert was subsequently released as '801 Live'. The music consists of more or less mutated selections from albums by Manzanera, Eno, and Quiet Sun, plus a full-scale rearrangement of Lennon-McCartney's "Tomorrow Never Knows" and an off-the-wall excursion into The Kinks' 1964 hit "You Really Got Me". Released at the height of the punk rock revolution in the UK, the LP nevertheless sold well throughout the world, particularly because it received rave reviews from critics, both for the superb performances by the musicians and for its ground-breaking sound quality.

Grading

I grade all my records using the Record Collector's Grading System which is as follows:

Mint - The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

Excellent - The record shows signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

Very Good - The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

Good - The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits discoloration etc.

Fair - The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise: it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/ or defaced.

Poor - The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

Packaging

Items are sent in new plastic sleeves and high quality, professional record packaging, with at least four stiffeners for protection.
