This is a sealed LP of "Ang Maharlika and Ang Bituin". It was released by WEA Philippines.
The "Ang Maharlika" piano concerto, composd by Lucino Tinio Sacramento, was commissioned by former First Lady Mrs. Imelda Romualdez Marcos and dedicated to former President Ferdinand E. Marcos. It was first performed on September 11, 1973 at the Reception Hall, Malacanang Palace, on the occasion of the birthday of President Ferdinand Marcos by Raul Sunico, pianist, assisted by the Cultural Center of the Philippines Philharmonic Orchestra, with Luis C. Valencia, conductor. The world premiere of the concerto was held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines on June 12, 1974.
The second side, "Ang Bituin", is also a piano concerto commisssioned by former President Ferdinand E. Marcos and dedicated to former First Lady, Imelda Romualdez Marcos. It was first performed on July 1, 1974 at the Heroes' Hall, Malacanang Palace, on the occasion of the birthday of First Lady Imelda Marcos by Raul Sunico, pianist, assisted by the Cultural Center of the Philippines Philharmonic Orchestra, with Luis C. Valencia, conductor. The world premiere of the concerto was held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines on December 20, 1977.
The composer, Lucino Tinio Sacramento, started his musical career as a band member in his hometown of Licab, Nueva Ecija. He was born on June 30, 1908 and died on April 25, 1984. He graduated in 1934 with the degree of Bachelor of Music major in Composition under the tutelege of Nicanor Abelardo at the Conservatory of Music, University of the Philippines. He has composed for many idioms-- vocal, instrumental, orchestra, and the opera. Among his compositions are the piano concerto, Ang Maharlika and Ang Bituin.
Fernando Alfon, Jr. Jun was born on November 15, 1948 in Sampaloc, Manila. He graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts, at the University of Santo Tomas. He played with a jazz band, The Intruders in 1968-72. His first one-man show was at Davao Imperial Hotel in 1976. As a painter, he was under the tutelage of National Artist Victor Edades. He has joined several group and solo exhibits both here and abroad. He was the president of the Davao Durian Artists in 1990. He is one of the top senior Filipino Contemporary artists.
Raul M. Sunico, Ph.D in Piano Performance, Doctor of Humanites, Honoris Causa Sunico has gained renown as one of the Philippines' finest international concert pianists, having performed in various countries around the world. He is an educator, author, composer, musical arranger, and recording artist with over 30 albums. He received several awards in piano competition both here and abroad; TOYM; "Best Instrumental Soloist Performance" in 1999, Katha; "Best Instrumentalist" in 2004, Aliw Awards Foundation, Inc. He is currently the Dean of the University of Santo Tomas Conservatory of Music.
