"Released in 1979, at the height of VST & Company's fame and with the sound of disco at its feverish high, "MARVIC" was meant to put the spotlight on VST & Company's charismatic vocalist Marvic 'Vic' Sotto.
And rightfully so, because Vic Sotto's honied tones is one of the reasons why VST& Co. enjoyed such a following (besides all those special hair, Val Sotto's in particular). And on this album, it's about Marvic and his singing.
Beginning with a slightly different take on "May I Have This Dance"-- unlike VST & Co's version, this one is sung entirely in English. This will be a recurring trend across the record, with already familiar songs getting the English lyrics version. With the aforementioned track alongside "Disco Fever" and "Kiss..Kiss" getting the rework. Then there's the somewhat awkward-at-first listen feeling of "I'll Sing...C'mon Dance" which is a rework of "Awitin Mo, Isasayaw Ko." All we can say about that is never argue with a hit.' But somehow, hearing just Marvic's falsetto sing this songs (as opposed to some of the manly voices on some VST original such as "Kiss..Kiss") does bring with it, a different appeal. Fans have fallen for it of course, as the saying goes, hook, line and sinker.
"MARVIC" also bring a couple of (relatively) new tunes to the table. The wondrously of-the-era correctness of "Sexy Lady" being one of them. And here, the sound of the late 70's disco and pop is captured with those swing style brass punctuating harmony and that's disco beat driving the song forward as Marvic croons from natural to falsetto. Pure Bee Gees inspiration! Same goes for surging "Summer Days And Summer Nights"."
There are ballads too, with "Baby, Take My Hand", the midtempo gem "It's in Your Eyes", and 70's-era stamped goodness of "Easy Kind of Love" making this album more than a curiosity, but a legit sonic and stylistic snapshot of one of the most recognizable voices in Pinoy pop."
