Description
American DEMO/PROMO Shout 45 pressing of Phillip Mitchell’s ‘Free For All (Winner Takes All)’ backed with ‘Flower Child’ (Catalogue Reference: SHOUT S-244). This is an authentic DEMO pressing of this Northern Soul track. This came in a small collection of Northern Soul 45s I brought some years ago which included the Little Joe Roman 45 I’m also selling this week. While I believe that some of them might be repros I have no doubts with this one whatsoever. This has a nice thin, flat rim the matrixes read ‘SHOUT S-244/ S-200096/7’. What I find intriguing is that this is a deep red vinyl (I hope I have captured this in the images above). I don’t believe I have ever seen this on an American pressing but is typical of British Pye pressings from the 1970s. In normal light it looks black but hold it upto a light and you can see through it. Condition-wise I’d grade this as EXCELLENT-. It is too good for a VG+ grading and the A-side is a solid EXCELLENT grading but the B-side which has been played more is inferior. Under an intense light numerous ‘wispy’ hairline scratches are visible under an intense light on both sides. To be frank these are fairly typical of American 45 pressings which rarely left the factory in mint condition. There are no marks of substance however, I have played both sides and note a couple of clicks on the fadeout of the A-side and one during the first minute of the B-side. Believe me this copy has not been trashed because it plays beautifully. Some of the instrumental passages are quite sparse and I note these passages are ‘quiet’ playing without intrusive background noise. This is a really solid copy and I doubt you’d be in any rush to upgrade it. I should note here that in common with a number of other Northern Soul 45s I’m selling this week which have come from the same source that there is a small green cross on the A-side label which is clearly visible in the attached image. This will be supplied in a plain white sleeve.

A solid copy and a desirable Northern Soul DEMO pressing! Please check my other auctions for a copy of Little Joe Roman’s ‘When You’re Lonesome’ on Tuff Records from the same source and other R&B and Soul collectables in similarly solid condition! Save me as a favourite seller as there is plenty more where this came from!
