Cover            EX

The Hipgnosis designed thick card gatefold sleeve is in great shape. Strong and flat with crisp and even opening edge, firm wide spine with no squashing and fully legible text. Just a few very light edge creases and some slight age-related discolouration spots in places, but otherwise very clean throughout with no marks, writing or indentations, and only extremely mild corner scuffing (see photos for detail).

*Note this release has a picture of a gargling monk at the top-right of the front cover. This was used to replace the picture of W. R. Phang's dental surgery (a genuine business), which was removed following objections from Dr. Phang due to dentists not being allowed to advertise.

Inners           EX

Comes complete with the two original double-sided picture inners, each one depicting the covers from the two re-released LPs that make up the album – The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn (1967) and A Saucerful Of Secrets (1968). Both are free from marks, creases and ring press. Just a very small split (3 inches) at the bottom of one of the inners, but otherwise superb.

Labels          EX+   

All four Harvest labels are clean and clear, and have retained the richness of colour in the yellow and green inks. No marks, ripples or handling smudges, and barely any sign at all of spindle traces.

*What makes these labels unusual, and something of a rarity, is that the second record has the side 4 label on both sides. In other words, both side 3 and side 4 have the side 4 label (so there is no side 3 label on the record).

Vinyl             EX+   

The vinyl itself is superb, with all four sides having retained their original glossy sheen and finish. No scratches or significant marks. Some light hairlines and wispy sleeve removal traces, but nothing that would affect play. The whole LP has been play tested on a Project/Ortofon/NAD system with Bayerdynamic headphones. There are no skips or jumps, and just the lightest of static between tracks, really superb sound quality throughout.

I have included the maximum of 12 high quality photos, taken in good light with a decent camera and from a variety of angles, so you can properly judge the detailed condition of the cover, inner and labels for yourself. Any significant marks or defects on these aspects of the LP will be clearly visible in the photos.

My own gradings are based on the standard record collector guidelines (see below).

I am not a record dealer, I am a 48-year old North London vinyl enthusiast re-creating my own private collection from a wide range of sources (having foolishly sold all my original LPs at a university record fair in my twenties!). I enjoy researching albums, and I am selling a small number of them on ebay, not to rip anyone off but just as a Sunday afternoon hobby. The LP will be securely packaged. It will be sent in a new polythene sleeve, together with two additional thick card inserts (one either side), set inside a new dedicated record mailer envelope. The vinyl will be separated from the cover to prevent any ring marking in transit. The package will be secured with thick tape and marked with additional large “FRAGILE” taped stickers twice on both sides.

RECORD COLLECTOR MAGAZINE GRADING GUIDE

MINT: The record is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

FAIR: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.

POOR: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

BAD: The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection filler.
