PINK FLOYD - A SAUCERFUL OF SECRETS

A gorgeous condition copy of this rare and hjighly sought after 1968 Pink Floyd rock classic, on the original black & blue Columbia label, STEREO, SCX 6258

The dead wax matrix numbers are :

Side A    YAX 3633 - 1 with stampers "1" and "G D" at 8.30 o'clock and 2.30 o'clock respectively 

Side B   YAX 3634 - 1 with stampers "1" and "H" at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock respectively

The appearance and overall condition of the flat and weighty 1st pressing vinyl is a solid excellent (EX). Both sides have retained a beautiful jet black lacquered sheen and in normal daylight show virtually no sign of wear and tear - a real "gleamer", in fact. With closer scrutiny under a very bright light on side 1 two hairlines (4cm and 5cm) come into view along with a 2 cm pencil thin scuff on track 1 (see photo), and just a few other very, very wispy hairlines - none of which are feelable and all appear to be surface only and purely superficial; and on side 2 there is a single 3cm hairline which comes into view with the part of that same hairline that traverses track 2 being just - and only just - feelable, though playback revealed no consequential intrusion upon the terrific audio quality whatsoever. This record has obviously been underplayed, considering it's age and staggering popularity, and it is hard to believe that this 52 year old antiquity is in such overall impressive condition as this...surely there cannot be too many left that are better! 

The labels are excellent plus (EX+). Lovely smooth textured labels with pristine silver text upon the black background, and the perfectly intact black and blue COLUMBIA writing and logo. The "K", "J", and "T" tax codes sit proudly upon the side 2 label. If you look closely under a bright light you may just be able to detect a few very faint spindle trails on each label - otherwise perfect!

The original front-side laminated Garrod & Lofthouse outer sleeve is excellent plus (EX+). It really is remarkable to come across a true UK 1st press outer sleeve still in condition as wonderful as this. Each edge, including the spine, remains rigid with no scuffing whatsoever - not even the usual one or two "nicks" - and all spine text remains perfectly intact. Each corner remains almost a perfectly defined right angle with virtually no rubbing. On the front side there are just three small (2cm) curved very light laminate lifts towards the opening edge and x6 very light (and not obvious at all) 1cm horizontal surface creases adjacent and perpendicular to the spine, and another x4 on the bottom edge, but none of these laminate creases are intrusive at all - in fact you will have to tilt the sleeve at the right angle in a good light to notice them in the first place - extremely trivial. And it's the same on the reverse side which again is hard to fault. The x3 flip backs are in great shape, with just x4 very, very light and innocuous sleeve laminate creases on the right side flip back and an area of laminate lift no larger than the nail on my little finger at the top of that same flip back next to the where it meets the top horizontal flip back. As you can probably tell I am struggling to find fault with this sleeve and am having to resort to being very picky...the opening edges are perfectly rigid with no fraying whatsoever, there is no unwanted writing or doodles, all text (including "File under POPULAR" on the top flip back in the right corner) is perfectly intact and all photos and art work, including the iconic front side colouring, remains rich, vibrant, and crystal clear. Simply put...fantastic!!

Finally, the quality of the audio is excellent plus (EX+)...superb, in fact. Fantastic tone and clarity throughout, even at higher volume and on higher frequencies. No skips, jumps, repeats, sticks, or clicks (perhaps the very occasional nano-second of static, but really that is irrelevant) and no background crackle/interference. What I really love is that when the stylus first hits the vinyl (on both side 1 and 2) all that can be heard is silence! Yes, even the interludes are silent! Clearly this record has been played only sparingly. So rare to come across a 1st press copy of this groundbreaking prog rock classic not only in condition as good as this but also with the audio quality as impressive as this.

Comes with original EMI advertising inner sleeve with no tears, rips or seam splits, no creasing, and no age discolouration either - remarkable! NOTE that I always place the vinyl into a new plain white inner sleeve for shipping purposes in order to protect the original.

In summary a wonderfully impressive condition copy of this increasingly hard to find and highly sought after 1968 Pink Floyd prog rock classic - worthy of gracing any serious vinyl collection and only continuing to increase in value.

I take great care in separating the record from the outer sleeve in order to help prevent sleeve damage in transit and I always insert the vinyl, outer sleeve and inner into a clear plastic sleeve, thus adding further protection.

Mint

The records itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items, such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

Excellent

The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and /or creasing.

Very Good

The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

Good

The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

Fair

The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents are torn, stained and/or defaced

Poor

The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents are badly damaged or partly missing.

Bad

The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler
