Her is a little bit of information regarding the misconception that Piper At The Gates Of Dawn issued a second pressing with the Blue Black Columbia label
Some reference books and websites refer to the vinyl’s distributed in this variant cover as ‘second pressings’, frankly this is a misconception – it is clear from the matrix that all pressings with the Blue Black Columbia labels are all from the first pressing and the cover had the category reference (File under popular music) added during the first press production run. If you want further evidence you only have to look at the date code on the bottom of the cover for verification; it reads 6709 (September 1967) clearly indicating September 1967 which is within the first month of release – there is absolutely no evidence to suggest that Columbia a ‘second’ pressings of this album within the first few weeks of release.
The recognised second pressing of this album was issued with the Black Columbia labels with silver text, white EMI logo.
In short. The sleeve baring the FILE UNDER POPULAR MUSIC has no baring on the pressing times and was just a matter of a printing change and is not a sign of a second pressing, as many collectors have been led to believe.
I hope this information clears this matter up.
