Fed up trying to snag a £500 solid Blue 1st issue of DSOTM? Well folks - there is another way to get that amazing 1st year audio on a solid pressing - without breaking the bank. Why not opt for a clean copy from Spring '74? Because these '74 copies, like this example, carrying the A3/B3 matrix are just one iteration from those famous solid blue copies. How can we be sure it's from Spring -74? Well, EMI changed the perimeter text on all their labels in Spring 74 - from Gramophone to EMI. When they came to DSOTM the typesetters cocked up the labels - and left TWO mentions of 'Made in Great Britain'. Clearly an error - and totally unnecessary. This error is very useful for dating these early copies [along with that matrix A3/B3]. Being only 1 year behind the original masters and pressed on decent vinyl they are very close in quality to earliest the 1st pressings. The heavy-set vinyl comes housed in an early cover with the left hand panel glued shut forming a nice solid front panel. Please not there were two sleeve variants in the 1st year of print. Plain Black & Midnight Blue. This example is 'Midnight Blue'. One presumes that MB copies were discontinued as it was cheaper to print straight black. We also have an original blue text inner sleeve from the time... BUT - No other bits bobs. No posters. No stickers. This is a straight out AUDIO copy.
Vinyl (Ex/Ex-) A superbly preserved original copy and has only seen light use. A couple of slight marks per side - but nothing remotely heavy or troublesome that would impinge on the audio. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a mostly EXCELLENT level of playback with a couple of slight deviations. For starters - those heartbeats at the start of side 1 - it plays nice and clean...and most copies do not do that. But as we continue through the LP the quiet and fussy low-key points play clean too. Not perfectly in ALL areas. But by and large [mostly] this is what I would consider a very high end copy. Expect a few minor static crackles in, perhaps, one isolated spot per side [in those super silly low-key moments ]. Absolutely nothing upfront or annoying. I did pick out one very minor tick at the end of the 1st section [S1], and a couple of minor ticks in the 1st section of 'Us And Them'. Nothing that distracting. If you can't sit back and marvel at this pressing - there's something wrong with you. By all means - if you have deep pockets and want the solid-blue...go for it. But anyone on a budget should be carefully considering this copy. Because it will get you close at a fraction of the price.
Cover (Ex) Oooh - I like this. A midnight blue cover. Not 100% sure why the discontinued the midnight clue covers. Suspect it was financial related, I would guess. Anyway - they look cool..look at the pics - not many copies will be looing this sweet after this passage of time. Someone's been extremely careful with it. DSOTM often come with quite a bit of surface wear - but this example has only slight handling observable [v impressive].. The interior looks superb - no issues at all. Edge wear is very slight and the openings are still nice and firm. The spine looks superb - way better than you typically find with very little wear at all. Overall the cover retains excellent rigidity. Very very fine indeed.
