As to the sound of DSOTM, the US original pressings were mastered from a copy of the master tape and the sound is limited by the deficiencies of that copy.

Basically, the best sounding DSOTM's on vinyl, IMHO (but after repeated A/B'ing of many, many pressings), are:
(i) the UK "blue-rimmed triangle" (as opposed to "all solid blue triangle" label, which is indicative of THE first UK pressing) with A/3 and B/3 stampers on the dead wax;

and (ii) the Japanese EMI ODEON, "all solid blue triangle" original pressing (as opposed to the second pressing by EMI Toshiba with the tan/orange label).

Those two are tied for the best sound.

The Japanese is much more expensive (as Scott mentioned above) and comes with a much quieter vinyl (which encourages more details to come out), but the UK is much more available (for example, on eBay).

The reasons for not choosing the very first UK pressing (with the solid blue triangle on the label) are, first, they are expensive and second, "Money" on Side 2 has a glitch that was not fixed until the A/3, B/3 stamper. For the UK pressings, after the A/3, B/3 stampers, the sound gets worse and worse.
