Description

Presenting a Pink Floyd record that I've never seen anywhere else, and that most people have never seen at all: the CBS/Sony Mastersound lp of 'The Final Cut,' made in Japan. Mastersound is an audiophile series, and this record sounds exquisite. Like most Japanese releases, it comes packed with all sorts of interesting inserts in Japanese, including the full song lyrics in Japanese, and an explanation (in Japanese) of the Mastersound process. The vinyl itself is more substantial than usual; while it is not 180 grams, it is well above the US version in weight and solidity. All well and good. But to me, what makes this lp so unusual is that the album jacket comes housed in a slipcase with the same album graphics on it.

What you see in the first photo is the album jacket in the foreground, and the protective slipcase in the upper left. Photo 2 shows the album jacket (the back facing up) slid partway out of the slipcase. Finally, the photo with my hand in it is a side view that shows the album nestled inside the slipcase. Honestly, have you ever seen a pink Floyd album like this? In fact, have you ever seen any album packaged like this? I don't think I have.

Regarding condition, the vinyl and jacket are both mint. I don't believe the vinyl has even been played all the way through. The slipcase is in very good condition, but is not perfect. There is a little bit of wear at each corner (nothing egregious), and a bit of wear over a 2-inch length of one edge of the spine. Finally, what you see in the last two photos is what I refer to as the 'blotch.' It is the residue of a round adhesive label that had been on the slipcase for a period of many years. I was unable to remove it with acetone, the usually effective adhesive remover. (Acetone does not damage the paper; it quickly evaporates.) The circular mark is about 2" in diameter. It is unfortunate, but there it is.

(In case you were wondering, photo 5 is an attempt to show the 'Mastersound' logo on the record label-- it's the blurry stuff above the CBS 'eye' logo.)

The 'blotch' aside, I believe that this is a fascinating and unique Pink Floyd item, as well as an impressive-sounding version of 'The Final Cut' (which, as you undoubtedly know, was recorded with the holophonics system). Please consider whether this unusual item would be a worthy addition to your music collection.
