Pink Floyd - Piper At The Gates Of Dawn MONO 1967
Very 1st Pressing On Blue/Black Label (no 'file under pop' comment)
This is a very first MONO copy of Pink Floyd's classic debut (a huge favourite of mine, as well). It is on the original Columbia Blue/Black label, serial number SX6157 and comes straight from 1967. This is a very rare album indeed.
The person who owned this record before myself obviously liked this record and played it a lot. In saying this, the sleeve is actually in pretty good condition. It is a nice heavyweight sleeve with only the usual amount of cellophane creasing on the front (ie, the creasing is by Rick Wrights head near where the record goes in the sleeve). There is a a small amount of the storage wear to the corners, but nothing major. The spine is in a good state as well (see photo 5) with 'the pink floyd' clearly in print. There is no tears or rips to the bottom and top (clear as clear).The back is also in good condition (it could do with a little bit of a clean but it is really quite clear and clean).
Overall i would grade this SLEEVE to strict record collector grades as VERY GOOD +
The labels are in fine condition. Side 1 has a a fair few spindle marks but is clean and clear. It also has the tiniest amount of wair round the centre hole, but as you can see from the photos, it is hardly noticable. Side 2 was obviously the previous owners favourite as there are more spindal marks on this side with more hole wair. There is a small scratch on it as well.
These LABELS are looking pretty good though, so i shall grade them strictly as VERY GOOD.
The record is certainly nice and loud musically, but there is a fair amount of crackling and a few loud pops here and there throughout the whole record. There are 2 places where the record skips. These places are once in the intro and once in the first spacey sections of Interstellar Overdrive on side 2. You do not notice the background noise as much as in songs like 'Lucifer Sam' for example. There is a fair amount of distortion in the louder/atonal parts of this record.
The record itself does have a nice shine but it does have some deep scratches and is generally well played (and at the end of the day, records are there to be played after all!). It is a bit of a state and doesnt look the most attractive looking record in the world but it still plays fine.
If i'm to be totally truthfully honest this record is somewhere inbetween GOOD and FAIR condition.
All in all, this is a RARE record, and despite the crackle (which is only noticable if thats what you are listening for!) this record is a bit of a trip back to 1967. This MONO version really does have some balls, and personally i felt great when i listened to it (it certainly sounds sounds better than the toppy CD version that came out last year). Yes, there are better copies out there which cost a bomb but at least this record lived through those years and was listened to! Personally the sleeve is good enough to accompany a very good/excellent copy of this album. A mint version of this album in 2006 could go for up to £200+. It is a good record if you want to get closer to how the album first sounded.
