What is it: Pink Floyd - The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn (Columbia SX 6157 - Matrix XAX 3419-2 - 1T/XAX 3420-1 1GD )
OK - if you are looking at this you won't need me to tell you that this, The Pink Floyd's first LP, featuring Syd Barrett, is an utterly essential item. You may also not need to be told that the Mono version (of which this is one) is a lot more up-front and aggressive than the stereo mix. This may be good news to you, but THIS IS A KNACKERED COPY of an utter masterpiece. However, not as knackered as it looks. Read on, MacDuff.
The record: POOR - When I worked in a rarities shop in the early 1990s, a record graded as POOR was one that looked crap and probably wouldn't play through (BAD was one that looked crap and definitely wouldn't play through, and would spoil your turntable if you even tried). This looks like a textbook POOR record. It has been played to death and taken to every party going for about a year in 1968. It even has a rock burn on one track. HOWEVER, with tender loving care I have got it to the stage where it only jumps once, for one rotation, at the start of Interstellar Overdrive (amazingly, my usually jump-happy Thorens deck played through the rock burn). I cannot see exactly where the offending scratch is (there are more than a few suspects); if i could, I would have spent a few more months seeing if I could get that last jump to go. However, I have a wife and a family who need me, so I could not get the time to work on it. Maybe YOU, faceless punter, will have more luck. Just to make this crystal clear, THIS IS A RECORD WHICH JUMPS - ONCE - and looks crap. If you are still interested, bid, bid, bid.
The sleeve: POOR - On the plus side, it is all in one piece. On the other hand, the cover is split at the top and bottom seams (though the spine is oddly unscathed). Loads of feathering to the opening edge, and the previous owner has helpfully written down the times of all of the songs on the back of the sleev (which is matte, so you cannot get them off). I grade hard, but I grade fair. NB: this copy has the 'File Under POPULAR: Pop Groups' text which some people say denotes a second pressing. I say it denotes that there were two pressings done at the same time in different plants. Duh.
Trust my gradings! I worked in the rarities department of a famous London record shop chain and I grade old school. If I say something is VG I am speaking Old School Record Collector grading - i.e. a record that has been very well looked after, not (as you see all the time on eBay) something that has been found in a lake. And I don't grade anything MINT unless I know it is unplayed.
I post everywhere, and my rates are fair. I will endeavour to send expensive things signed-for, and will provide proof of postage if necessary and help you hound the postal service if anything goes missing (hasn't happened to me yet - touch wood).
NB: I recycle packaging - it's cheap and (in environmental terms) it's the right thing to do.
