THE RAREST MISPRINT LABEL VARIATION WITHOUT THE “BARRETT” SONGWRITING CREDIT UNDER THE “MATILDA MOTHER” TRACK TITLE

Original 1st Stereo West Coast issue of Pink Floyd’s first album, also known as “The Piper At The Gates of Dawn”. Pressed in Los Angeles by Rainbo Records
for Capitol Records, this copy contains the rarest misprint label. It’s impossible to find this label variation present on the first day 1st Stereo pressing only. I’ve always known about this label variation but have actually come across it the first time ever. 1st print Tower Records orange/brown misprint 2⅞” pressing ring labels don’t have the “Barrett” songwriting credit under the last song’s title “Matilda Mother” on Side 1. There is one more feature that differentiates this label variation as it has the Side number next to Stereo and not next to the catalog number. Iconic labels with the lower case “t” Tower Records logo have the “Mfd. in U.S.A.” rim text and not “Mfd in U.S.A. by Capitol Records, Inc.” as seen on the later pressings. Original cardboard 1st print single-type “Kaleidoscope” cover has the catalog number ST-5093 and the Tower Records logo. The song titles for “POW R. TOC H.” and “TAKE UP THY STETHOSCOPE AND WALK” are misspelled on both the labels and cover along with the title of “CHAPTER 24” being misspelled on the label. The back cover with Syd Barrett’s drawing, album title, credits and song titles contains the “6” number in the lower right-hand corner. The album comes with an original Tower Records plain white inner sleeve. Very early 1st Stereo issue pressed by Rainbo Records Los Angeles contains the following matrix numbers: ST-1-5093 S-1546 / ST-2-5093 S-1547.

I grade the cover as Excellent Minus even though there is a light stain in the lower right-hand corner on the back. The cover is super clean and doesn't have any splits, writing or ring wear. The edges and spine are in great condition. Some very light age spots in a couple of places along with a very light barely noticeable push in on the top right corner. Side 1 of the the vinyl is somewhere between strong Very Good Plus and Excellent Minus condition and Side 2 is strong Very Good Plus. The vinyl has only a couple of light non-feelable surface hairlines and scuffs from the inner sleeve that don't affect the playback. The beautiful labels are in Excellent condition, very clean and scuff- and wear-free, only having a few very light spindle marks that can be seen under a strong light source. The vinyl sounds great with some light occasional background noise, which is most likely just static and will get reduced or go away if the record is professionally cleaned with a VPI cleaning machine. The original plain white Tower Records die-cut inner sleeve is in Near Mint condition.
