Description
I am parting with some of my treasured LPs. The Piper at the gates of dawn was an incredible first LP by Pink Floyd in 1967. It was a Syd Barrett Masterpiece, and is therefore unlike any other Floyd LP. They were early psych masters playing avant garde gigs around London in the mid 60's along with bands like The Move, and Soft Machine. Syd's recording career would be short as the LSD he was absorbing took a toll, and he was incapable of continuing with the band. Another leftover 2 songs made it to A Saucerfull of Secrets, their second LP, and Syd was quickly replaced on guitar by David Gilmour. The band searched for a while for a voice, with Roger Waters taking up songwriting. Their late 60's and early 70's LPs were more bandcentric, with all members of the band contributing on LPs Atom Heart Mother, More, Ummagumma, Meddle, and Obscured. But Waters songs did creep into their cannon during that time. It would be Waters who would start the more conceptual LP's starting with DSOTM, and insist on perfection to the point that their LPs would take 3 years to produce. Syd was remembered in songs from Wish you were here, almost a decade after his problems, Floyd was still remembering their original leader. Syd Barrett's career was short, but incredible, and never to be forgotten. Pipers is a landmark LP.
This copy is a German stereo pressing in great condition. It is the 5th pressing that was released in 1969, 2 years after the first, as the first pressings didn't sell, the record companies wanted to continue pressing this in small batches to continue to support a band they believed in. This copy plays perfectly with no background sounds, and is glossy as new. The labels show no real play marks, and they have the interlocking ovals on the bottom of the labels indicating this as a 5th pressing from 1969. This is still a fully analog recording and pressing, and not like the newer pressings that have been mastered digitally. It sounds beautiful, as German pressings are known for. The cover assort as all European covers were. The cover has something that was smudged onto the top area of the cover (possibly white paint?), but is a streak that runs for about 2.5 inches next to the Columbia logo on Roger's face. The back cover shows a slight touch of disc rubbing at the top, and a circular discoloration where someone must have peeled a label. The spine has a ding right before the words Pink Floyd. Otherwise the cover is all beautiful. A super clean copy of this Floyd masterwork.
