*********
The Wall was released in the U.S. on December 8, 1979 according to the Pink Floyd Archives, although some discographic sources give November 30 as the release date. The U.S. Columbia catalog number was PC2 36183.
It was an ambitious two-LP gatefold album, with the famous white-brick-wall artwork designed by artist Gerald Scarfe. The inside of the gatefold contains Scarfe's illustrations and the album credits, while the records themselves use Columbia's distinctive "Wall" picture labels.
The first U.S. issue has some differences from subsequent pressings. Most notably, the original inner gatefold doesn't list the individual members of Pink Floyd as band members. Instead, it credits the album's words and music to Roger Waters and lists David Gilmour, Bob Ezrin and Roger Waters as producers. Later issues changed some of this wording.
The original release also came with thin paper lyric inner sleeves, with lyrics printed on both sides. Some copies were originally sealed with a clear title sticker on the shrink wrap reading Pink Floyd The Wall 36183.
And this was a HUGE album
The timing is important. Pink Floyd were coming off the enormous success of Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here, but The Wall was a very different project—essentially Roger Waters' elaborate rock opera about isolation, alienation, fame, war, relationships and psychological barriers.
Columbia apparently had reservations about the project when executives heard the completed album. Those concerns diminished dramatically when "Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2" became a No. 1 single in both the U.S. and U.K. The album itself went on to become one of Pink Floyd's biggest commercial successes.
