Details of Nimbus Supercut -
"Possibly the rarest of Pink Floyd's official releases. Originally released in 1984, mail-order only, by Hi-Fi Today in collabration with Nimbus Records. Only 1000 of this record were pressed, (much less than all other audiophile recordings)  but how many were sold is unknown. Reckoned by many to be the best audiophile version of this classic album.

One unusual feature with this recording is that it has been banded by Nimbus, ie the groove has a wider spacing between each track. The record itself is engraved on both sides with the original cat number SHVL 814,  YR(?), Sulo, 3, MPT, V,  JH and NIMBUS ENGLAND.

The techie stuff, courtesy of Nimbus :- They were, in as many cases as possible, done from original quarter inch production masters not from copies. They were cut using a Neumann SX 74 Cutter Head driven by Neumann VG1 valve Amplifier Rack. The only other active components in the programme chain apart from the Studer A80 Pre-Listen Machine used to playing back the tapes was an Ortoton High Frequency Limiter, from memory their STL 732 which acts as a variable low pass filter rather than in other more radical fashions, and is therefore benign in its effects. A level control between the tape machine and the cutting system was a passive switched resister network. All the cuts were done flat without any equalising, compression or limiting apart from some gentle high frequency limiting to make for playable high frequency signals. The Neumann Lathe used for these cuts was extensively modified by us and included a very advanced vari-groove system for groove spacing, enabling longer playing times with a larger minimum radius, thereby reducing distortion at the end of sides. They were all pressed using a special Power Blend of vinyl which ICI made exclusively for us. It retained a near flat overall frequency response.

Nimbus Supercut LPs were released as a mail order only promotion to Practical Hi-Fi and Hi-Fi today magazine readers during the early 1980s. All Nimbus Supercut releases were available in limited quantities of around 1000 pressings per title, and as such, many are rarely seen for sale and are arguably rarer than releases from Mobile Fidelity, Nautilus, DCC, etc. Nimbus established the need for high quality vinyl pressings at a time when most mainstream vinyl which was haphazardly mastered and pressed on poor quality recycled vinyl.

In contrast, Nimbus Supercut releases were mastered from the the original master tapes, through an all valve mastering process, using no limiting, to result in a high quality pressing which was as close as possible in sound to the original recording. Nimbus also had ICI produce an extremely pure vinyl for this release, which has exceptional frequency reproduction and is virtually noise free.
