If you were to minded to start mapping out the indie canon, Doolittle by Pixies would sit right near the centre whether you like it or not. This is one of those records that gets referenced so often it risks becoming background noise. It's the album everyone loves, the one endlessly cited in interviews, the lodestar for a generation of bands.
It's also the kind of release that blurs the division between the tourists from the lifers. You'll see it in the vastest record collections alongside those just starting out. It makes every “best of” list ever. It lurks behind countless later successes that borrowed its attitude wholesale and hoped nobody would check the dates.
For a whole lot of people it was the starting point. For others it's still the thing they keep circling back to when newer discoveries lose their shine.
So there's a slightly mythic quality to it now, helped along by decades of hype, reissues and critical reverence. But unlike plenty of 'important' albums, this one isn't looking like it will one day be quietly retired to museum status. It's still bought, still argued over, still held up as a benchmark — sometimes fairly, sometimes out of habit.
Either way, Doolittle remains one of those records you will end up owning eventually, and with probably more than one copy too. Resistance is futile.
