Description
The Playboys play two fox trots, "Ain't She Sweet" and "Shanghai Dream Man" on Pathe 6996. The former is a modernistic arrangement with a good trumpet solo by Eddie Ritten and some hot clarinet.

You'll recognize the musicians as members of Lud Gluskin's band. After securing a contract to lead a jazz band at the "Le Perroquet" nightclub in 1927, Gluskin "hired the 'Playboys,' an all-American jazz band from Detroit under the direction of violinist Fred Zierer. In May 1927 the 'Playboys' had arrived in France for an engagement in Biarritz. The job fell through, but luckily they managed to make six recordings for Pathe before joining Gluskin's band, where they became the hot nucleus of his newly formed orchestra. A good example of the musicians' solo work is 'Ain't She Sweet,' which is the best of the five sides issued by the 'Playboys.'" (quoted from Jazz Oracle's Gluskin CD)
Visually, this 11-1/2 inch record is in E- condition generally. It plays between E- and V+. There is a short scratch at the beginning of "Ain't She Sweet" that ticks lightly about a dozen times. There is some background noise on the less interesting "Shanghai" side. The record comes in its original 11-1/2" Pathe sleeve. Please note that this record is vertically recorded and therefore requires special playback equipment.
