Description
Here is one for lovers of pressing peculiarities: the original "Preview Copy" (stamped on back) of Pony Poindexter "Gumbo" on the yellow and black (no deep groove, as issued) labels of Prestige PR 16001. Prior to its commercial release, Prestige must have had several different plans for the record, since the run-off not only has a clear matrix number of PR16001, but a secondary matrix of 8298 in which the first 8 has been heavily converted to a 7 (to become 7298). More on this later. The playing surfaces have a few light, inaudible marks, but a complete play of the entire record revealed only two very light tics, both at the beginning of Side A. The laminated cover is bright and clean throughout; 1/8" wear on the top seam, at the opening. Other than the "Preview Copy" stamp on the back, the cover has an additional anomaly: there is a Prestige/New Jazz sticker on each side that obscures the PR16001 on the cover and that gives a New Jazz NJ8297 catalogue number instead. According to the Ruppli discography, the catalogue number 8297 is "unissued". In all, a very fine recording with a peculiar pressing history. Personnel includes Booker Ervin, Al Grey, and Gildo Mahones.
