Description

Condition is NM/VG+. Nice looking NM discs, box has split at top center of lower half, the cloth hinge is dried out but can easily be re-glued.

  • Bethlehem deep groove monaural original 3 LP box set of Gershwin’s “Porgy And Bess” (Bethlehem EXLP 1).
  • Features Mel Torme and Frances Fay in the title roles, an all-star lineup of jazz stars and session musicians and standout performances by Johnny Hartman, Betty Roche and George Kirby as Sportin’ Life.
  • Included is the rare cloth kerchief insert with signatures (stamped) by the entire cast and musicians tucked into a slot on the front of the box (see picture). Also included is the original 12-page booklet with program notes and background.
  • For this project Bethlehem employed nearly its entire roster of jazz musicians and singers along with a couple of ringers from Emarcy and Norgran. A listing of the instrumentalists alone reads like a Who's Who of great jazz players of that era: Duke Ellington and his Orchestra, The Stan Levey Group; the Australian Jazz Quintet and The Pat Moran Quartet. Notable sidemen included Maynard Ferguson, Cat Anderson, Buddy Childers, Clark Terry, Willie Cook, Ray Nance, Howard McGhee, Don Fagerquist, Frank Rosolino, Bob Enevoldsen, Britt Woodman, Herbie Mann, Sam Most, Bill Holman, Johnny Hodges, Russell Procope, Paul Gonsalves, Jimmy Hamilton, Harry Carney, Ralph Sharon, Claude Williamson, Sal Salvador, Stan Levey, Sam Woodyard, and Alvin Stoller, to list only some of the more familiar names.
