Description
Up for sale is a very rare single (7 inch, 45 RPM, vinyl record) featuring a great two part instrumental funk/soul number by an under-appreciated New Orleans R&B trumpeter.

Porgy Jones (1940 - 2014) was the stage name of Warren B. Jones, who was born and raised in New Orleans' French Quarter and Treme districts. He began music lessons at age 7 from Yvonne Bush. He attended Joseph S. Clark High School where he was very active in school bands and continued his studies under Bush. He then went to Southern University on a full scholarship where he studied with Alvin Batiste. Jones left college to join the band of Jerry "The Iceman" Butler. He ended up in New York for the next 10 years, performing (with Butler) at the Apollo and Regal theaters and playing trumpet for such luminaries as Ray Charles and Art Blakey. Returning to New Orleans in 1972, he formed his own jazz band. At one point or another, members included: James Rivers, Alvin "Red" Tyler, Roger Dickerson, Ed Frank, Geraldine Bazzle, Herb Taylor, Smokey Johnson, and Alfred "Uganda" Roberts. For several years, the group was a mainstay at a club called Sylvia's, located on Freret Street.
The single I am selling is one of only two Porgy Jones releases that I know of. Both were on the Great Southern label. Jones also recorded as a side man with Wardell Quezergue, Allan Tousaint, and George Benson. His motto was: "Respect the music and be prepared to play". Porgy Jones died in New Orleans at age 74.
John Berthelot (1942 - 2011) was also born in New Orleans. He majored in music education at Loyola University. He played saxophone for The Contours and backed Smiley Lewis and Ernie K-Doe, among others. After completing military service, Berthelot founded the Great Southern record label. He was a composer in several genres including classical, jazz, and swamp pop. He ran the record tent at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival (Jazz Fest) for quite a few years.
