This lovely LP from Spanish Decca (SXL 6179, Spanish pressing, black/silver WB label, stereo) features conductor Franco Caracciolo and the Orchestra Rossini di Napoli in a captivating program pairing Luigi Boccherini’s Symphony in C minor Op. 41 G519 and Giovanni Battista Viotti’s Violin Concerto No. 3 in A minor, both made at the Conservatorio, Naples during July/August 1964 (producer: Erik Smith / engineer: Kenneth Wilkinson).
In the Viotti, the distinguished soloist is violinst Giuseppe Prencipe. These are both wonderful works that deserve to be far better known; the performances captured here would be difficult to surpass, wonderfully pointed and vibrant.
Although not credited on the reverse side of the jacket, the superlative liner notes found there were written by producer Erik Smith. The striking cover art reproduces a detail from one of Sebastian Pether’s paintings of Vesuvius’ 1825 eruption.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is slight wear and discoloration along the edges and to the rear panel, but that is all. Really, this is close to NM. There are no seamsplits, owners' markings or other defects and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and extremely attractive – a lovely collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Visually, there are spindle trails and hariline marks. In terms of sound, although surfaces are not absolutely silent, really this is a fine copy and playback is superb, close to NM. Those requiring a flawless or near-MINT copy are advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this is an excellent collector's copy.
