As a UK pressing this is by far the rarest Pretty Things LP (I have ten mono SF Sorrow’s for every copy of this) but even rarer is this German version with the different sleeve. Musically it continues the Rolling Stones style RnB of their debut but with a bit more variation in the sound, couple of poppy songs, couple of bluesy ballads but it’s mainly excellent sixties RnB all the way.

Condition:

Sleeve: Far superior to the usual UK design with a moody picture of our five heroes lurking in an overgrown garden looking as if they’re waiting for some poor unsuspecting passer-by to wander in. It’s made of thinish card laminated on the front only with no manufacturors name given.

The front is generally in very nice condition, it’s very clean with no writing or tears anywhere and considering how flimsy the card is remarkably few creases, there’s a very light crease in the top left corner and another in the bottom left corner but these are very light and barely worth noting. The lamination has shrunk slighlty over the years leaving a line down the open edge, the card outside this line has feathered slightly but again this is nothing major. There is a light scratch on the left hand side of the sleeve, if you look at the leftmost band member then level with his head to the spine is a very light scratch.

The unlaminated rear is in equally nice condition, there’s the odd light dirty mark from forty years of handling but generally it’s clean with no writing, tears or creases and rather suprisingly no ringwear. Again the card at the open edge is feathered a bit but not really badly.

The top seam is totally unworn.

The spine has a small amount of wear but it‘s still square and straight with all of the writing clearly readable. The wear is a very small patch right in the centre which thankfully avoids the writing and it looks like it’s the beginning of a split, (it’s not split through yet though) if stored and handled properly this shouldn’t get any worse.

Record: The disc is also very nice. It’s made of good heavy 60’s thickish vinyl which is very flat. It’s very clean and has retained a nice dark sheen. Viewed under normal light it looks just as nice as anything with no visible marks however when viewed under a harsh lamp there are some light hairlines present, nothing heavy just some of the light marks which are caused by taking the record in and out of the sleeve and are completely inaudible.

The two labels are in perfect condition. Both are very clean with no writing, stickers or tears and very little visible spindle wear.

When played it’s just great, there’s a vibrant clear sound which comes leaping out of the speakers (although this isn‘t helped by a rather muddy production!), like most mono records there is a very direct sound which lacking the channell seperation of stereo productions sounds very powerful. There’s a couple of seconds of noise right at the start of each side which disapates before the music starts but that aside there’s no hint of any surface noise throughout the entire album apart from one occasion near the end of side two when there are two loud pops between tracks (but nothing affecting the music), there’s no groove distortion at all either which is unusual for a mono record of this age, apart from the things already mentioned it plays totally silent all the way through and was a real joy to listen to.  This will be a great addition to any Pretty Things collection or any 60's UK albums stash.  

This isn’t the easiest album to find at the best of times but finding a copy which looks and plays better than this will be a very tough challenge especially with the much rarer German sleeve.
