Previn & The LSO - Shostakovich SYMPHONY No. 8 - EMI ASD 2917 - AWESOME! - TAS
Here is one of the finest demonstration records you will ever find. I mean that. Perhaps in the top-ten of all discs in your library.
The eighth of Shostakovich, yes, is on the TAS list, but to know why, all you need do is place the stylus down on the third movement...then strap in.
What you will hear is the battle for Leningrad, and it is plainly something else: The screaming, hell-cry of the trumpets, the incessant artillery of the drums, the death knell of bones in the xylophone, the hopeless charge of the strings…it is as spellbinding, I must tell you, as it is exhausting. (And, it will leave you stunned.)
In all of my years, I have never, not even once, been able to proceed to movement 4.
Rare music from a remarkable recording. Jacket is without major wear of any kind. Record within should play near mint, if not better.
In my view: THIS is why we play vinyl.
