THE HIGHEST HILL (3:13) Sonny was bom June 5, 1936, in Pryor, Oklahoma where he now lives with his wife Mamie and their two daughters, Chrisi-9 and Cindi —8. He began singing with his mother when he was just a young boy in Church. By the time he reached high school he had learned to play the guitar, and sang lead in a quartet that won second place in the Oklahoma State Barbershop contest. After graduating from Pryor High School in 1954, Sonny began working on pipeline construction with his father who is a pipeline welder. In 1957 he started singing professionally in and around Los Angeles, California where he met Mamie and they were married in 1958. They lived on the West Coast for six years and both of their daughters were born there. This is where our story starts. In Sonny’s own words. . . “In 1957 I met a man who became my manager, and together we secured a recording contract with one of the major recording studios in Hollywood. My manager and I went on a nationwide tour with my first record. The tour lasted three months and took us to almost every state. Despite the advantages we had in knowing the right people in the business, recording for a major label, doing much radio and television, ect., I couldn’t make it to the top nationally even though my record was number 1 in several local areas. Later recordings brought like results. I believe with all my heart that it was the Lord. “In July of 1967 with the help of a preacher, Bro. Everett Thornton, on fire for God, and because of the things I remembered, having been raised in a Christian home, that still small voice led me to a man called Jesus. Now there is joy unspeakable and full of glory. Now there is peace, though the world be raging. Eternal life instead of eternal death. “Now I’ve reached that goal that I sought after for so long, and it turned out not to be worldly acclaim, but success in the Lord Jesus Christ. “It’s my sincere wish and prayer that whoever hears this album will be blessed by it and lifted up and made to realize that He truly is the King of Kings?
