PUBLIC IMAGE LTD. (PiL) ‘METAL BOX’; CAPTAIN BEEFHEART ‘TROUT MASK REPLICA’ & ‘LICK MY DECALS OFF, BABY’. THREE VG + VINYL REISSUES OF CLASSIC PSYCH/UNDERGROUND/POST PUNK, POST ROCK. A TOTAL OF SIX 12” RECORDS AND A NICE SHINY TIN! Please read...

PUBLIC IMAGE LTD. (PiL) METAL BOX (Four Men With Beards, US pressing, 2006). Remastered 3 x 12”, 45RPM, 180g reissue of only 5000 copies and now long deleted. All six sides are at least VG+ with a few marks (paper scuffs from the divider sheets, probably) and a tiny scratch which causes brief pops and crackle on the tracks ‘Bad Baby’ and ‘Chant’. Generally excellent playback throughout but as the discs are only separated by thin sheets of paper a clean would remove the few fingerprints on some sides and also reduce the occasional pop heard Infrequently elsewhere. No skips, jumps or warps. The embossed circular metal canister has a few marks from storage which is common to this reissue. There’s also a small dent and a little barely visible ‘marbling’ on the rear (the latter only noticeable under a very bright light). As per the original this also includes the A5 track list sheet and the four circular paper dividers which separate the three discs. The packaging is an easy VG+ and the tin is still remarkably shiny and reflective, unlike the dull matte finish of the originals which tarnished very quickly. This is still the only genuine facsimile of the 1979, 3 x 12” original - the band recommended that you play a few sides (in any order) and then put them all away until next listen, so this format continues their true intention (as does the 45 RPM playing speed for deeper bass sound). Total running time is just over one hour. This landmark record celebrates it’s fortieth birthday this year. And celebrating it’s fiftieth is....

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & HIS MAGIC BAND: TROUT MASK REPLICA, Straight/Warners US pressing, 180g double album reissue of this 1969 classic. The spine reads “1977 Warner Bros. Records Inc” but this issue dates from the year 2000. There’s an inaudible scratch on the beginning of side one but this a visual blemish only. There’s a small scratch on the final track but like the rest this also has excellent playback. No skips, jumps or warps, VG + at the very least. The sturdy Cal Schenkel designed gatefold sleeve is EX. This remains one of John Lydon’s favourite albums and was a discernible influence on his Metal Box. A still astounding Zappa production of 28 killer tracks over four sides with just under 79 minutes total playing time.

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & THE MAGIC BAND: LICK MY DECALS OFF, BABY. Limited edition US pressing (Rhino Records) with facsimile Straight labels. 180g reissue of Beefheart’s follow up to Trout Mask, originally 1970. Like the above this is from 2000. Vinyl is very conservatively graded as VG + with no skips, jumps or warps; the thick glossy sleeve is EX. Another influence on (post) punk - both Buzzcocks and Magazine covered the third track on this classic.
