NOTE: the record is a first pressing in superb condition. The cover is a 1975 Heritage repress with the new (and for me, much superior) artwork. This album was purchased at a recent fair. I simply bought this due to the condition and did not even notice the record was a first issue. Quite how this hardly played record got into a second issue cover I do not know. What is for certain the record is in beautiful condition and rarely seen as such. And if any collector needs an upgrade first pressing, well this will take some beating.

Label/Format: Harvest with matt gently textured surfaces. This has the correct first issue SHVL 775 catalogue number and the Gramophone Co Ltd rim text.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a tiny few very light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Warps: Few vintage records are ever perfectly ‘flat’, so some slight or very gentle arm movement is normal. If any record I offer has more than that, I will mention it, and it can be assumed all I offer should track without issues, even on budget turntables.

Rarity: First pressings are rare – this record IS a first pressing, and in superb condition for looks and sound. This a first for me – accidentally buying a reissue, only to find the record is a very first pressing. So this is a mis-match copy, but with a first issue record in this stunning condition – this could prove a bargain?

Matrix Nos: SHVL 775 A-1 / SHVL 775 B-1 [which confirms beyond any doubt, this is a first issue record – matrixes NEVER lie]

Mothers / Stampers: 1 G / 2 R [not only a first issue record, the 1 G mother/stamper, the very first in the sequence]

Musicians: John Gustafson – bass, lead vocals; J. Peter Robinson – keyboards; Mick Underwood – drums, percussion.

Brief Info: A three-piece progressive rock band who took their name from Professor Bernard Quatermass, a fictional scientist. A somewhat unusual band and one-off album using a Hammond organ as the main instrument. It has elements of early Atomic Rooster and is a famed album in the early Harvest releases. Predictably, the album sold in minimal numbers and was quickly deleted. Repressed again in 1975 with a new cover. Even this is hardly common and I actually wonder if initial repressings used any ‘spare’ originals to get them out rather than letting them go to ‘waste’. Purely speculation of course, I simply have no idea how or why a genuine first pressing was paired with a later cover. So, it-is-what-it-is – a fantastic hardly played first issue record with a second issue cover with the new graphics. What is for certain, first press records seldom surface in this condition and a great opportunity for rare prog-rock collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: Again – this is a 1975 reprint cover with the new graphics as-seen. A single fully laminated format. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse with the new catalogue number of SHSM 2002. Includes the plain white inner sleeve with the UK PATENT NO. 1,125,555 code.

Lamination – Front & Back: The laminate retains excellent shine, freshness and clarity. Several mainly light surface creases, but with scant visibility when viewed normally full on, and hardly any lifting. Light dulling seen under light around the rim area. An attractive example now with totally new artwork in colour.

Top Edge: Thin, but still straight with barely any wear, the laminate smooth and this also includes text as per the spine which is all fully intact and strong.

Bottom Edge: Almost as issued.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, the front mainly very sharp with any thickening little and light. The back which is a fraction proud of the front has moderately thickened. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, even though thin, still straight with minimal compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled laminate. Just three or four ultra fine hairline cracks.

Corners: Any tip rubs minuscule, better than excellent shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this mid-70’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many collectors – but be sure – this is NOT a first-issue 1970 cover.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a basic plain solid white unlined inner which has lightly aged. Mildly discoloured with a little ink set-off on one edge. Hardly creased with all edges solidly intact with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): arguably better. YES, this is a FIRST-PRESS copy from 1970. Why it was inside a 1975 reissue cover, I do not know, but few would complain. A superb visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and heavily pressed. A copy appearing hardly even played on all the evidence with any surface traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This genuine and rare first issue record plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. This is quite a long album and has some very quiet passages, so a quality clean pressing becomes even more crucial – and this delivers. Few available first press copies will outperform this significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and with due care. Nothing of any note at all spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This took me aback when discovered, a freak find and what a beauty. It will prove immensely difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended. Matched with a quality first issue cover, and you have something quite special.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
