Queen : At The Beeb A1 / B1 1st Press

This first pressing plays to a fantastic standard and provides such a good insight into their early 'live' sound.  This particular edition is easily one of the finest I have ever listened to.  I sold one last month and this one is equally as good.  The clarity and depth of the audio cannot be faulted, not one single click or pop and no static or crackle either!

There is only very minimal spindle wear and it is clear this vinyl has only been played a handful of times and even then maybe not all the tracks.

The cover is practically 'as new' with no shelf wear and the plain white die-cut inner is also in superb shape.

The vinyl is in superb condition and has a very impressive jet-black glossy sheen.  I cannot detect any obvious hairlines and there are certainly no scratches.  All I can see is one very small faint mark on S2 but this has no affect on the stunning audio at all.  There is very little spindle wear and the run out grooves and labels are also super clean.

Play grading  

The intro on 'My Fairy King' is faultless, there is not even a single dust tick and Roger's 'scream' comes through with resounding clarity and power!  It continues to play with wonderful quality and the quieter vocal/piano section shows just how infrequently this record has been played as there is no 'background' of any kind.  As the volume builds there is no distortion and to the end is plays with stunning precision.  A Mint start to the album for sure.

'Keep Yourself Alive' more than keeps up this standard by playing with superior quality from the very first note.  The clarity and depth throughout is sublime and again there is no interference and that includes the fade out.  Another Mint track.

The quiet intro on 'Doin' Alright' plays beautifully with not one dust tick, the clarity is amazing!  From then on the audio is immaculate and this track alone demonstrates just how impressive their 'live' sound was from an early stage.  The quieter sections play with stunning clarity and the 'Should be waiting for the sun...' verse is a prime example of that.  The double bass section followed by the 'high octane' section is 'as new' - incredible power and no distortion whatsoever.  Every note is so precise and the last verse (with Roger singing!) also plays to perfection.  The final section again shows just how well this record has been cared for down the years.  Mint in every sense of the word :-)

The percussive intro on 'Liar' has no 'background' and as Brian's iconic sound enters the scene there is no let up in quality.  It continues to play with wonderful quality and for once there is barely any inner groove distortion on the top end.  If there is any it is so minimal and totally non-intrusive.  It is a near perfect version and I am sure many would still say perfect!  Brian's mid solo is so strong and the 'All day long...' section also plays with stunning quality.  The following 'heavy' section is so powerful and the 'choral' section is as good as I have ever heard.  The remainder is of the same standard and this easily deserves a Mint- grade.

'Ogre Battle' has just a touch of barely audible static on the intro for a couple of seconds and then proceeds to plays with great quality.  From start to finish there is no interference and the playback is again so impressive.  A slightly different 'sound' you could say and that is because S1 and S2 were recorded at different times at the BBC.  This side was recorded 10 months later in Dec '73 and has more of a raw 'live' quality.  With only a couple of minor dust ticks (no clicks or pops) this is worthy of a Mint- grade in my opinion.

The intro on 'Great King Rat' could not play with any greater clarity and continues in the same precise way.  Once more I am just so impressed by the sheer quality of the audio here and there is literally no intrusion.  The vocals are so clear and each instrumental section is of a standard that belies the age of the record.  There is no distortion and the 'Now listen all you people...' section plays with sublime clarity and definition.  The remainder does not disappoint and plays with great depth and power.  Another Mint track I am pleased to say.

'Modern Times Rock 'N' Roll' is 'as new' from start to finish and again the lack of play means it has lost nothing in terms of power and clarity.  There is obviously no groove wear and Mint is well deserved.

'Son And Daughter' is stunning from the very first groove!  Every section plays with stunning quality and this track alone makes this a very collectable album!  It is a very different 'live' version and as I said previously they were so professional even at this early stage.  It plays with such depth and power and I really cannot fault the audio, very heavy in sections!  The 'Brighton Rock' interlude plays so well and I cannot overstate just how well this early classic plays.  There is no interference, no distortion and the sonic quality is just exceptional!  To the final note it plays with such dynamic quality and I reiterate it is so heavy!  A Mint end to this underrated album.

In summary this 'live' album plays to a wonderful standard with no interference and it is clear this record has hardly ever been played, the sonic quality on both sides proves that.  The audio is so 'clean' even during the quieter moments and it truly gives a fascinating insight into early Queen.  S1 was recorded at the BBC even before their debut album was released and yet they have already honed their skills to perfection!  Now over 30 years old this album plays with such sublime quality and I am certain any keen collector would be as impressed as I am by what it has to offer!

The Cover

As near to perfect as is possible this cover has been so well preserved over the last 31 years.  The edges and spine have no wear and for once the corners are also in fantastic condition.  The opening edge is untouched and in all honesty I'm finding it difficult to find any faults!  The front cover is beautifully clean with no marking and I can only see one very minor crease near the top which I know the photos will not pick up as it is so faint!  The back cover is also in superb shape with no marking or creasing.  A stunning example.

The Inner Sleeve

The plain white die-cut inner is near perfect with no side splits and only very minimal creasing.

The Labels

They have no marking or writing and only minimal spindle wear - just 3/4 faint traces on S1 and only one on S2.

Play tested on my Pro-Ject Essential III Turntable / B&W 684 Speakers
