Description
QUILP (1975) Rare LP w ANTHONY NEWLEY singing SCORE This film was produced by READERS DIGEST MAGAZINE in 1975, about the time that musicals were going out of favour in Hollywood and with audiences. It was based on one of Charles Dickens grimmest works, THE OLD CURIOSITY SHOP ( by which it was known in the U.S., and on the video). It was sometimes referred to as MR. QUILP".!". Newley wrote the songs as well as starred in the lead role. ( Interestingly, when he and Leslie Bricusse combined their songwriting talents, they came up with popular scores ( STOP THE WORLD and THE ROAR OF THE GREASEPAINT) . On his own, Newley did not fare as well, and none of the songs from QUILP are known today, or those from his other solo efforts...including CHAPLIN, his last attempt. This very RARE demo recording has ANTHONY NEWLEY singing all the songs that were used in the film. It has been a collectors item almost from the day its existence became known, and one I personally never ran across anywhere until 2006. The song titles are: HAPPINESS PIE LOVE HAS THE LONGEST MEMORY SOMEWHERE EVERY DOG HAS HIS DAY WHEN A FELON NEEDS A FRIEND QUILP THE SPORT OF KINGS This demonstration LP was made prior to the film's completion, in order to promote potential recordings of the songs. Composer Newley is also the singer. ( The film also starred David Hemmings, Michael Hordern and Sarah Jane Varley, among others). I suspect this demo is a music publishers production, in alliance with Readers Digest. The number is CHAP-12574. It is in LIKE NEW condition.
