~~ Originally released in 1980, Stand Up and Fight was the second album from British hard rock turned heavy metal band Quartz. The band had been active for a few years, and like Saxon started out with a more blues-based/traditional hard rock sound before taking on a heavier metal sound and becoming a part of the emerging New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) scene.

Less raw and aggressive than Angel Witch or Holocaust, and not as melodic as Diamond Head or Tygers of Pan Tang, Quartz played heavy metal with a hard rock backbone and the technical chops of a band that has been around the block a time or two. They probably had more in common with bands like Riot and TKO than most of their younger NWOBHM counterparts, but they still brought a great metal energy to anthemic songs like "Stoking Up the Fires of Hell," "Revenge" and the monster title track. The whole album is a completely rocking, fist in the air, classic slab of metal, and one that belongs on any "essential NWOBHM" list.

If you're a fan of British hard rock and metal in general, and the NWOBHM scene in particular, Stand Up and Fight is a must-have album. It's the best Quartz had to offer, and a great example of what made the NWOBHM so exciting.
