With Cipollina, Freiberg and Hopkins having now gone, the Quicksilver Messenger Service looked to be dead and buried. The previous album, What About Me, was a good effort if never that earth shattering. Dino Valenti and Gary Duncan were now taking charge of the band and produced one of the all round better Quicksilver Messenger Service albums. If taken into context that more or less all the QSM releases have had their fair share of filler material then pound for pound Quicksilver could arguably be described as the bands finest effort of any of the line ups the band went through. "Hope" kicks off the album on a stable note before going a little downhill with the upbeat barroom shuffle of the naive "I Found Love" but by the time the laid back and sultry "Song For Frisco" comes on the album looks to have found an identity, while the self explanatory "Play My Guitar" and the rousing whooping tone of "Rebel" round off side one on a good vibe, but "Song For Frisco" is the pick of the first side, a very catchy sing a long track which packs a poignant tone, as well as packing the guitar strains of Duncan which are a match for anything that Cipollina put his name to while he was in the band. Nicky Hopkins replacement, the ridiculously named Chuck Steaks, does an admirable job on keyboards and organ on Quicksilver especially on the excellent and haunting Gary Duncan track "Fire Brothers" with his spiraling, echoing piano notes adding the prefect tone for Duncan's sombre guitar and vocal while the following track, "Out Of My Mind", also complete with some acoustic guitar, stands as a highlight of the album. By all accounts the song is about mental health, or at least paranoia associated with drugs kind of metal health, and the vocal of Valenti is sublime, dark and haunting while containing the immortal line "_It Can Drive You Crazy When Somebody Calls You Insane_...!". Along with this fine mix of rockers and moody melancholic tunes, there is also a meaningful ballad with the finely executed "Don't Cry My Lady Love". It may have been easy for this song to sound dumb and corny but there is enough emotion and conviction in the song to make anybody going through relationship problems relate to it, the harmony vocal of Valenti and Duncan alongside a subtle acoustic guitar and Chuck Steaks (I wonder did he ever throw beef at gigs?) piano lines drive the song and make it so memorable and very important to the album, and in fact the bands entire output for that matter. And on a completely different plane, but following it up nicely, "Truth" is a typical gritty QSM song. Containing tons of stunning guitar work, from both Valenti but mainly Duncan, it brings the album to a fitting end. Valenti sings his heart out on this as if he has to somehow rage the point of the truth home to let no one be in any doubt that this line up of QSM was a strong one, especially on this album. Quicksilver were essentially a sixties band and their brand of rock may have looked dated by the early seventies, but the music on this album is honest and urgent. Quicksilver is easily the gem in the back catalogue of the band and an album that would hardly disappoint any fan of guitar led rock. Good songs with plenty of diversity and solid musicianship all round, Quicksilver is the bands last great album and one which goes by mainly unnoticed by many fans.
