From the confident and swaggering opening to its achingly beautiful and noble conclusion, the Berlin Philharmonic and Karajan give us a breathtaking and exciting performance. The strings are blended perfectly. Each line has a sureness. The piece builds impressively, becoming more and more special as it moves along. At first you think you are hearing a good Heldenleben, by the middle, you realize you are hearing true greatness. This is an interpretation that makes the most of the music. Karajan knew Heldeleben's architecture and its soul. This is a deep and rich version of it. Karajan and the Berlin Phil. once again, give exemplary performances.
