Formed in London in 1968 out of the ashes of The Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin became the definitive titans of heavy rock and one of the most successful, influential bands in music history. The group was a perfect storm of individual virtuosity, combining the visionary production and blues-soaked guitar riffs of Jimmy Page, the soaring, golden-god vocals of Robert Plant, the fluid, multi-instrumental brilliance of bassist/keyboardist John Paul Jones, and the thunderous, unmatched drum grooves of John Bonham. Together, they took the heavy blues-rock blueprint and infused it with English folk mythology, Eastern musical structures, and sheer sonic weight, creating a monolithic sound that laid the groundwork for hard rock and heavy metal.
Throughout the 1970s, Led Zeppelin ruled the music world with an unprecedented string of flawless studio albums—from their explosive self-titled debut and the riff-heavy Led Zeppelin II to the mythic Led Zeppelin IV (featuring the ubiquitous "Stairway to Heaven") and the sprawling double album Physical Graffiti. They famously rewrote the music industry rulebook by eschewing traditional radio singles and television appearances in favor of the "album-oriented rock" format and breaking box-office records on massive, legendary stadium tours. Following the tragic passing of John Bonham in 1980, the remaining members chose to disband immediately rather than replace him, preserving a pristine legacy that has sold over 200 million records worldwide and secured a permanent spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
