The 1960s marked a monumental transformation for rock and roll, evolving from its fast, dance-oriented 1950s roots into a complex, genre-spanning force for artistic and cultural expression. The early part of the decade was defined by highly polished arrangements, the California surf rock harmonies of the Beach Boys, and Phil Spector’s roaring "Wall of Sound" production, before the 1964 British Invasion—spearheaded by The Beatles and The Rolling Stones—radically rewrote the global pop charts. As the decade progressed, musicians increasingly integrated blues, folk, and avant-garde influences, using new studio technology and heavier amplification to push the boundaries of the genre. By the late 1960s, rock had fragmented into highly innovative movements like psychedelic rock, socially conscious folk rock, and the heavy blues foundations of hard rock, forever altering the landscape of modern popular music.
