VINYL is NM/EX
Extremely clean, high gloss vinyl is EX+ to NM on 3 of the 4 sides. Side 2 has one audible pressing dot; otherwise NM for that side. Album plays very clear, full and clean EX+ to NM throughout, except for that one tiny spot which plays through fine but is audible. Clean labels all sides, with small wear near center hole on label side 4.

COVER is EX
Crisp, tight, thick laminated Gatefold cover is super clean front and back with a mere touch of barely perceptible shelf wear. No creases, soil, writing or other marks. Inside gatefold is clean and bright with some light age-toning showing in u.r. corner, and one very tiny nick at top, left side. Seams and spine are 100% intact with no wear or splits.

This is the famed Mercury recordings of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Rafael Kubelik. Mercury pioneered the one microphone technique for its monaural recordings. This is one of such recordings. On the technical side, this recording is unbelievably vivid. The sound is not unduly compressed--the orchestra's fullness can be easily felt.

Kubelik's tenure at Chicago Symphony Orchestra was brief--only about three years or so. Reputed as a gentleman with a sensitive personality, Kubelik shows his artistic sensitivity in the Smetana work. Ma Vlast is series of symphonic poems, not just a collection of pieces representing places in Bohemia. Kubelik, a Czech who left his homeland (then under Communist rule), respects the poetic side of the symphonic poems and thus tries to convey for us his longing for the places that are named in this series. Kubelik's readings of Vysehrad (High Castle), Sarka (the third of the six "poems") and Tabor (the fifth of the six "poems") are particularly telling; the readings evoke best Kubelik's emotion as a Czech and bring out the spirit of the more sensitive pre-Reiner Chicago Symphony.

From the liner notes:
"For this recording, a single Telefunken microphone was hung 25 feet directly above the conductor's podium. The performances have been recorded and transferred from tape to disc masters on Fairchild tape recorders. The processing from tape to disc was done through McIntosh amplifiers which drive a Miller cutting head operating in accordance with the Fine-Fairchild Margin Control process of variable pitch and variable depth of cut. In this way, there is assurance of 100-percent reproduction in disc form of the recording originally captured on magnetic tape.

FOR BEST RESULTS, this record should be played at FULL ROOM VOLUME. Only in this way will the quieter musical passages be heard in proper relation to the full orchestral climaxes. Owners of wide-range reproducing equipment are advised to set their bass and treble controls so that playback characteristic will be in accordance with the response curve published by the Audio Engineering Societ."
