Bright, extremely clean cover is NM, front. Snapping bright back has some light tan age marks and small spot of wear at opening edge. No creases, writing or soil. All edges straight, all corners sharp. Seams and spine 100% intact with no wear or splits.

“No folk, but plenty of raga, a really wonderful batch of Indian-styled 60s rock instrumentals served up as a collaboration between sitar player Harihar Rao and a host of LA's grooviest session players of the time!

The record's a bit like Ananda Shankhar's late '60s classic for Reprise in that it features a fair bit of familiar rock tunes from the time, all recast as Indian-themed instrumentals with Rao's sitar firmly in the lead, getting plenty of support from Dennis Budimir (playing some amazing fuzzed-out electric 12 string), Howard Roberts, Herb Ellis, and Tommy Tedesco on guitars - plus organ and electric piano from Larry Knechtel, bass from Lyle Ritz, and drums from the mighty Hal Blaine!

With players like that working the set, you can bet that the sound is plenty darn groovy and also pretty darn tight - almost funky at times, with a great kick from Blaine's top-shelf drum work."

Raga-fied instrumental covers of mid-'60s Folk-Rock, Garage and British Psych
.
Some of the tunes were natural selections for this sort of project: the Byrds' "Eight Miles High", the Rolling Stones' "Paint It, Black", and the Beatles' "Norwegian Wood" were some of the greatest Indian-influenced rock classics ever, and while the raga influence wasn't as overt on the Yardbirds' "Shapes of Things", it was in there.

Among others also given the raga-rock treatment are Paul Revere & the Raiders' "Kicks", Simon & Garfunkel's "Homeward Bound", the Outsiders' "Time Won't Let Me" and (most unexpectedly of all) the Turtles' "Grim Reaper of Love".

Sitar master, Harihar Rao, leader of Los Angeles' Ravi Shankar Music Circle and director of the Indian Studies Group at UCLA's Institute of Ethnomusicology, had early-on been a great influence on jazz great Don Ellis, and the two later formed the Hindustani Jazz Sextet in the mid-1960s. In 1965 Rao and Ellis co-wrote An Introduction to Indian Music for the Jazz Musician, which was printed by Jazz Magazine. In 1966 he recorded this LP for World Pacific, continuing to work with Ravi Shankar. In 1973, Rao and Ravi Shankar co-founded the Music Circle, an organization dedicated to promoting Indian classical music.
